...the teacher!

"There is no silver lining here, but there is a lesson. It is not the kind of lesson that anyone can merely teach someone else, as if it were a matter of having the right information. No, this is a lesson that must be absorbed. The lesson is that life, in the end, is about loss, and suffering itself is the teacher." Christian Century, April 22, 2020, p.9, quoting Leonard J. Delorenzo, theology professor at Notre Dame, writing to students about the pandemic upending their academic trajectory (Church Life Journal, March 25)
One of the teachings of suffering is that which Mary Oliver elucidates. Give into Joy for there is enough pain and "don't be afraid."  The depth of our learnings from this pandemic will be determined by the reach of our openness.

Don't Hesitate
by Mary Oliver

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy,
don't hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty
of lives and whole towns destroyed or about
to be. We are not wise, and not very often
kind. And much can never be redeemed.
Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this
is its way of fighting back, that sometimes
something happens better than all the riches
or power in the world. It could be anything,
but very likely you notice it in the instant
when love begins. Anyway, that's often the
case. Anyway, whatever it is, don't be afraid
