Courage.

John Lewis has been much in the news lately following his death and funeral. MJV, who recently sent me The Color of Water, just sent me her booknotes which are worth publishing, that MA in English is on full display in her notes. As is her wont she also included a newspaper clipping.

The clipping is from the Quad Cities Times of  August 3, 2020, and it is a column by Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker. Parker's column is about Lewis' funeral. She writes "Through 45 arrests and countless beatings, most memorably during the Bloody Sunday march Lewis helped lead  across Alabama's Edmund Pettus Bridge, from Selma to Birmingham....  Parker wonders how Lewis had the courage to non-violently face the troopers batons. She continues "For a man like Lewis, the source of his strength may correspond to something I recently read taped to a restroom mirror. Handwritten in cursive on flowery notepaper it said: 'Courage is fear that has said its prayers.'"

"Courage is fear that has said its prayers." President Bush speaking at the funeral said that Lewis lesson to us all: "That we must keep open to the call of love."

   Words to live by.

Takk for alt,

Al

PS Since I took over Joanne's Caring Bridge during her hospice I've also posted the same message on my blog. Caring Bridge has some frustrating quirks, such as not printing the picture in yesterday's post. Effective September 1, I will only post on my blog so you can move to it before then. Go to www.negstad.blogspot.com and paste it into your browser as a favorite so when I post you'll get a notice.
