Journal entry by Joanne Negstad — Aug 30, 2018
Joanne's jewelry reflected her life. There is costume jewelry that looked nice and she often used if it matched her outfit. These do not have much monetary value, but they hold memories of her, when and how she used them. My wedding gift to her was a pearl necklace so they have deep sentimental value and perhaps some monetary value, too. Her engagement diamond was soldered to her wedding ring. With those of course the memories run deep; buying the engagement ring and giving it to her while the poinsettias froze in the car, slipping the wedding ring on her finger June 6, 1964,...she seldom had them off so they went everywhere she went. There is the diamond jewelry she bought for L's M's, wedding, with their own special memories. She had an inexpensive watch she was using when she entered hospice that was promised to S. Numerous medals and pins given as awards filled a small box. Among the precious items are a number of things from her parents and grandparents; heirlooms.
All of this reminds me of the crushing presence of absence. Perhaps it is progress that absence is less present sometimes, but when I am aware of her absence the pain seems no less.
Blessings,
Al
