A new school is under construction at Wat Klang. When I asked when it would open a teacher said "When there is enough money, but, it would have been sooner if the head monk had not spent $70,000. on an elevated walkway between chapels, in case there is another flood." School are on temple grounds but the teachers are paid by the Thai government. The new building will be 10 feet higher than the old wooden one.
The school has been spiffed up. The outside has been painted, there are new planting around it and the floors have been refinished. There is only one faculty change, the woman who taught age 3, has been replaced by a man.
The teachers gave me a warm welcome. I taught 3rd and 4th grade today, the 4th were familiar because I taught them last year. A friend, KW, who teaches ESL in Minnesota put me on to a method called 'Total Physical Response". It worked wonders. Perhaps I'll be more effective this year.
Thai teachers retire at age 60. They are officers of the government. Their teacher's retirement pension is 3 5ths of their teaching pay.
