It's a typical Ayutthaya afternoon at 93 degrees and dew point in the upper 70s, The sun shines brightly in the cloudless sky, finishing our ice cream we live the air conditioning of Swenson's Ice Cream store and plunge into the crowded stalls of an Asian market. Accompanied by four girls, three teenagers (two of whom don't like each other) a ten year old and the mother of two of them we're off to do some clothes shopping. My inability to understand much Thai shields me from some of the drama. Up this lane, down that, at this booth and another, items are perused , debated, held up and then we move on. All the while one curmudgeon is wondering how this is happening to him, bringing him back to the longest "year" of his life which was three hours in a chemistry lab.
All's well that ends well. Clothes suitable for work and life were found, chosen and purchased. There are shirts, jeans, shorts and a jacket. Using funds from their unseen friends in America, my momentary discomfort is well offset by the opportunity to give them a boost. Tears well in their eyes when I tell them that people back home have done this for them. They wai me...that graceful hands together greeting and thank you...and then they wai the people back home who have been so generous.
